What Is ASP.NET?

ASP Web HostASP.NET is a web application framework developed by Microsoft. It allows programmers to create dynamic web sites, web services and web applications. It is the successor to Microsoft’s Active Server Pages (ASP). ASP.NET is built on the Common Language Runtime (CLR), allowing programmers to write ASP.NET code using any supported .NET language (including C# – the most widely used CLI language, C++/CLI, F#, J#, Windows PowerShell, JScript, IronPython, IronRuby, Managed Extensions for C++, Managed JScript, VBx, VB.NET, A#, Phalanger, Cobra and IronLisp).

ASP.NET pages, known officially as “web forms”, are the main building block for application development. Web forms are contained in files with an “.aspx” extension. These files contain static (X)HTML and code to define server-side Web Controls and User Controls where the developers place all the required static and dynamic content for the web page. One key difference between ASP.NET and classic ASP is that the ASP.NET coding model (code-behind) encourages developers to separate code from page content. This not only makes global changes faster, it also makes web pages more search engine friendly.

ASP.NET aims for performance benefits over other script-based technologies (including Classic ASP) by compiling the server-side code to one or more DLL files on the web server. This compilation happens automatically the first time a page is requested (which means the developer need not perform a separate compilation step for pages). It can also be pre-compiled before deployment, eliminating the need for real-time compilation after release. This also eliminates the need of having the source code on the web server. This feature provides the ease of development offered by scripting languages with the performance benefits of a compiled binary.

ASP.NET code and pages can be developed in a number of applications, including Adobe Dreamweaver, Microsoft SharePoint Designer (free), Microsoft Expression Web, Microsoft Visual Studio and MonoDevelop (free open-source). It requires a Microsoft server environment to run. If you intend to use or already use ASP, you must select a Microsoft Windows Server hosting plan. Halcyon InstantASP (iASP) and Chili!Soft ASP are third-party products that run ASP on platforms other than the Microsoft Windows operating systems (Linux/FreeBSD/CentOS). Neither alternative to real ASP fully emulates every feature, and may require additional components with which traditional ASP has no issues, such as database connectivity. Microsoft Access database support is a particular issue on non-Windows systems.

How Is ASP.NET Used In The Real World?

In real-world web applications, you have likely encountered it in the form of an interactive webpage. These could include shopping carts, surveys, forms or any other type of page that required some kind of input from you. ASP is one of many solutions to dynamic web page creation. It can also be used for things like gathering data from your site’s visitors, setting cookies, making calculators, error handling, forums, and pretty much anything else that can be done with web application languages like PHP, Perl or Python.
