The Best Green Hosting

This list is based on how green a webhost is and their feature set. One server alone has roughly the same climate impact as a 15mpg SUV, so imagine the impact of a whole data center with hundreds of servers, complete with cooling and offices. We at MyMultiHost.com think that green hosting is a fantastic idea and a step in the right direction toward a solution to climate change. We encourage you to take advantage of what these green hosts have to offer. Some of the common features these hosts provide include:

  • Unlimited Domains, Subdomains and Parked Domains
  • Support for PHP, Python, Perl, Ruby, CGI, SSI and MySQL
  • .htaccess editing, custom error pages and customizable PHP.ini files
  • Full Third Party Script Support (e.g. WordPress, PHPBB, osCommerce, Photo Gallery, etc.)
  • Comprehensive Website Statistics, Password Protected Directories, Hotlink Protection and Website Backups

What is Green Hosting?

Green HostingGreen hosting uses 100% renewable energy (wind, solar, etc.) to power their facilities and offices. Since nobody can control the source of each electron being delivered to them by the power grid, green hosting companies can buy renewable energy credits (RECs). RECs can only be created by the production of renewable energy and are different from carbon credits (which are a complex market-driven system that, while somewhat effective, do not produce immediate results).

When a company purchases an REC, the money goes to a green energy provider and they generate from renewable sources the amount of energy specified (typically 1 megawatt/credit).

So, if a green hosting company uses 1000MW from the power grid and purchases 1000MW of RECs, they are paying for renewable energy providers to deliver the same amount of clean power to the grid. Many hosts advertise that they are over 100% green, meaning they purchase more RECs than the energy they use.

Other techniques that green hosting providers employ to reduce carbon emissions include recycling, cutting back on paper usage, power-saving office equipment, HVAC and lighting, more energy efficient servers and more energy efficient server cooling systems.
