What Is Adobe ColdFusion?

Cold Fusion Web HostingColdFusion is a rapid web application development platform commercially available from Adobe Systems Inc. Current versions of ColdFusion include advanced features for enterprise integration and development of rich Internet applications. It is most often used for data-driven web sites or intranets (typically large applications and robust web environments), but can also be used to generate remote services. ColdFusion primarily competes with PHP and ASP.

One of the distinguishing features of ColdFusion is its associated scripting language, ColdFusion Markup Language (CFML), which compares to the scripting components of ASP, JSP, and PHP in purpose and features, but more closely resembles HTML in syntax. “ColdFusion” is often used synonymously with “CFML”, but there are additional CFML application servers besides ColdFusion, and ColdFusion supports programming languages other than CFML, such as server-side ActionScript and embedded scripts that can be written in a JavaScript-like language known as CFScript. ColdFusion can also handle asynchronous events such as SMS and instant messaging via its gateway interface.

ColdFusion can generate PDF documents using a single CFML command. The generated document can then either be saved to disk or sent to the client’s browser. ColdFusion allows for unprecedented control over PDF documents including PDF forms, merging of PDFs, image insertion, watermarks, headers, and footers. ColdFusion can be closely integrated with Flash, Shockwave, Java, Ajax, Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft Office SharePoint, .NET and Apache Solr. It also allows you to easily create Atom and RSS feeds as well as manipulate ZIP, JAR and image files. ColdFusion extensions can be added to Adobe Dreamweaver for a seamlessly integrated web development environment.

ColdFusion provides a number of additional features out of the box. Some of these features include:

  • Simplified database access
  • Conversion from HTML to PDF and FlashPaper
  • Graphing and reporting
  • Simplified file manipulation including raster graphics and CAPTCHA
  • Integration with key Microsoft products including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to code User Defined Functions (UDFs) and ColdFusion Components (CFC’s) entirely in CFScript
  • Client and server cache management
  • Tighter integration with Adobe Flex and Adobe AIR
  • Client-side code generation, especially for form widgets and validation
  • Data retrieval from common enterprise systems such as Active Directory, LDAP, SMTP, POP, HTTP, FTP, Microsoft Exchange Server and common data formats such as RSS and Atom
  • File indexing and searching service based on Verity K2
  • Graphical User Interface (GUI) administration
  • XML parsing, querying (XPath), validation and transformation (XSLT)
  • Task scheduling
  • Virtual File System Support – an ability to treat content in memory as opposed to using the Hard Drive to increase speed.

Adobe ColdFusion can run on Windows Server 2003 Web, Standard, or Enterprise Edition with SP1, R2 & SP2; Windows Server® 2008; Windows XP Professional or Home Edition; Windows Vista; Red Hat Linux 5; SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10.3; Open SuSE 11.1; Ubuntu 9.04; IBM® AIX 5.3 or 6.1; Mac OS X 10.5.x; MAX OS X 10.6.0; Solaris 9 or 10. It also works in a variety of server environments, including IIS 5.1, 6, 7; Apache HTTP Server 2.0.63 and later; Sun Java System Web Server; Sun JDK 1.5_13, 1.6_14; J2EE application servers.
